Tamar Avineri is a mathematics instructor at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She earned her bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics from UC San Diego in 1998 and her master's degree in Mathematics from UCLA in 2000. Tamar is also currently a doctoral student in Mathematics Education at NC State University. She has served as an online mathematics course reviewer and co-developed the AFM course for NCVPS. She has also developed and taught mathematics courses for NCSSM Online for two years.

Rita-Marie Conrad is an online faculty member for Fielding Graduate Institute and Walden University as well as Senior Consultant for the Learning Resources Network (LERN). She co-authored two books with Judith Boettcher, Faculty Guide for Moving Teaching and Learning to the Web in 1999 and 2004, and The Online Teaching Survival Guide: Simple and Practical Pedagogical Tips in 2010. She wrote Engaging the Online Learner in 2004 with J. Ana Donaldson, and Assessing Learners Online in 2008 with Albert Oosterhof and Donald Ely. Rita has a Ph.D. in instructional systems from Florida State University and a Master’s degree in educational media and computers from Arizona State University.

 

Joe Coyle joined the Kinesiology Department of UNC Charlotte in 2008 as a Lecturer in Respiratory Therapy. He has spent the last 20 years as an Anesthesiologist and Critical Care physician at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) in Charlotte specializing in Cardiac and Thoracic Anesthesia. He has served as the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, the Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit and Vice-Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Coyle has long been involved in Respiratory Care and in 2008 made the leap from the operating rooms and ICUs at CMC to teach full-time in the newly developed B.S. in Respiratory Therapy Program at UNC Charlotte. Since that transition, the BSRT Program has grown from the first class of 6 students to a current total of 74 students.

 

Cris Crissman teaches the “Learning Through Literature with Young Adults” graduate class at North Carolina State University. After ten years of exploring online book clubs, she took the class and the book clubs inworld to Second Life. The students self-select genre book clubs and work collaboratively to produce bookcasts to share with the whole class and the world. Inservice teachers have applied the model in their classrooms. Sam Eneman has been an Instructionl Technology Consultant at UNC Charlotte since 2000. He first worked in the Office of Distance Education and has been in the Center for Teaching & Learning for more than seven years. He provides training and professional development support to faculty and staff. This includes developing workshops and Web-based video tutorials, meeting with faculty for one-on-one consultations, and producing the Center's podcast, "Teaching and Learning Matters." In addition to these and other related projects, Sam is also responsible for Wimba training.

 

Bob Ervin is Vice-President for Learning Technologies at Fayetteville Technical Community College. His long term commitment to distance learning was acknowledged at this year’s NC3ADL meeting where he received the eLearning Pioneer award which goes to an individual who has worked as a trailblazer to promote the growth of Distance Learning at their colleges and/or statewide. As one of the primary architects of the NCCCS VLC, Bob has hosted VLC Development Centers, Editing Centers, and currently both the 2010-2010 Development Center and Technology Support Center. Through multiple grants he has pioneered the creation and development of over 49 3D-Interactive Learning activities (3D-ILAs) that have been contributed to the NCLOR. He is currently working with Carnegie Mellon on the Community College Open Learning Initiative (CC-OLI) in which a number of the 3D-ILAs will be featured in a pilot biology course.

Stacy Gant holds B.A. degrees in Psychology & Sociology from Jacksonville University and a master's degree in Educational Media and Instructional Design from the University of Florida (1999). Her current research interests include faculty training and support, online instructional design and LMS implementation and support. Stacy works as the Associate Director of Faculty Development and Support Programs in Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) at North Carolina State University, leading a team of instructional technologists in supporting the NCSU community with instructional technology tools and techniques. She has over fifteen years of experience in supporting faculty with learning technologies and in developing online courses, certificates and degree programs.

 

Ed Gehringer is an associate professor of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. He received his Ph.D. from Purdue University and has also taught at Carnegie-Mellon University and Monash University in Australia. His research interests include collaborative learning systems and software for promoting the authentic assessment of student work. He has made approximately 100 presentations at education-oriented conferences and workshops.

 

Shana Glenzer works with schools and districts in North Carolina as the Blackboard Learn Representative. Over the last six years, Shana has served in various sales and marketing roles within Blackboard – working with K-12 institutions across the United States to expand educational opportunities through online learning. Previously, she served as a trainer and account representative for SMARTHINKING, an online tutoring company. Bred out of an education-focused family, five of her immediate relatives are teachers along the East Coast.

 

 

Deborah Gray manages curriculum and professional development for SAS® Curriculum Pathways®. She oversees the creation of Internet-based resources that explain concepts/processes best understood in interactive, multimedia formats. She and her team deliver on-site and online professional development that prepares educators to integrate digital content into instruction.

Heather Hamrick

 

Richard Hartshorne is an Associate Professor of Instructional Systems Technology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Florida. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, his teaching focuses on the integration of technology into the educational landscape, as well as instructional design and development. His research interests primarily involve the production and effective integration of instructional technology into the teaching and learning environment. The major areas of his research interest are rooted in online teaching and learning, technology and teacher education, and the integration of emerging technology into the k-post-secondary curriculum.

 

Tina L. Heafner is an associate professor of social studies education in the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, her teaching focuses on the social studies methodology, curriculum studies, and content specific integration of technology. Her research interests primarily involve the state of social studies, best practices for social studies teaching and learning with particular emphases on content area literacy and technology mediated learning. Her administrative responsibilities include coordinating both the M.Ed. in Secondary Education and the undergraduate Minor in Secondary Education.

 

Bobby Hobgood is the Director of Research and Development in Online Curriculum and Instruction for LEARN North Carolina (www.learnnc.org), a K-12 outreach program of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, he manages special initiatives in online learning like the development of online language courses in Mandarin, Arabic, and Japanese for the North Carolina Virtual Public School. Bobby also conducts professional development workshops in global education and represents LEARN NC at education conferences around the state and around the U.S. He serves on an expert panel for the Asia Society. Bobby’s research interests include global education, social presence in online learning, formative assessment K-12, technology integration, and differentiation of instruction. He was the chair of the 2009 NCDLA Virtual Conference, the 2010 NCDLA Blended Conference, and it the chair of the 2011 NCDLA Virtual Conference. He is President-Elect of NCDLA.

 

Candace Holder is a seasoned educator with particular expertise in the field of distance learning. She has been the Director of Distance Education at Surry Community College since 2000 and is responsible for the Colleges Distance Learning Programs. She is also the Director of the North Carolina Community College System Quality and Assessment Center. From 2002-2008, she was Director of Virtual Learning Community (VLC) Center Course Development and Editing Centers, where she was responsible for online course development and editing, along with the supervision of community college instructors across the state in the development of VLC course content.

Hope Johnston is the Distance Learning Coordinator for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools(CMS). With over 3000 enrollments in spring 2011, CMS is currently the largest user of online content provided through North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) in the state. She currently sits on several committees for distance learning including the NCVPS Advisory Board and Technology Advisory Board. Hope holds a BCA from UNC-Charlotte and an MAAA from Winthrop University.

 

Jennifer Jones received an M.A. in Educational Media with a concentration in New Media and Global Technology from Appalachian State University and have worked in the community college system for eight years. As an Instructional Designer at Wake Technical Community College, she works with faculty to design course content that incorporates emerging technologies with principles of Universal Design for Learning to meet the needs of a diverse student population.

Shaun Kellogg has spent the past 10 years as an elementary educator, beginning his teaching career as a Peace Corps Volunteer and later teaching in the public school systems of Michigan and North Carolina. He earned his teaching degree from Michigan State University and holds a Master's Degree in Educational Technology from Western Michigan University. He is currently working on his doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction at North Carolina State University with a concentration in Instructional Technology. His teaching and research interests include technology integration, new literacies, and social-media applications at the elementary level.

 

Anastacia G. Kohl, Ed.D, is a Lecturer of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and has been the Faculty Coordinator SPAN 203 since Fall 2006. During the Spring of 2011, SPAN 203 had 45 sections taught by 36 instructors. Dr. Kohl has used Sakai since 2009.

Robert Ladd is a photographer and instructional designer. He is interested in the creative process and in ways to incorporate active learning into education. He leads and carries out projects involving web and blog design (Wordpress), video editing (Final Cut Pro), imaging (Photoshop, Lightroom), print and publication design (InDesign, Illustrator), writing and editing. He also consults with individuals and groups, facilitating project brainstorming processes and providing instruction in use of software and application of design principles.

 

Mike Lange

 

Bill Lovin specializes in Underwater, Natural Science and Environmental Media Production. He has filmed in over fifty countries around the world producing programs for broadcast, non-profit and educational markets. Also, a technology visionary, he was honored by The Tech Museum of Innovation in 2002 as an Intel Environmental Award Tech Laureate for his creation of EstuaryLIVE, a live, interactive, Internet field trip. Heidi L. Maston is an internationally recognized Distance Educator with experience as a presenter, researcher, author, developer and instructor on all areas related to Distance Education with a special passion for Identity Development via communication, social networking and virtual worlds. Her current research is titled: " How to systematically harness transactional distance for identity development in SecondLife in order to measurably increase academic performance. ." She holds a Masters of Distance Education, 5 Graduate Certificates in various components of D.E. from UMUC and is a Doctoral Candidate (Ed.D.) at Fielding Graduate University.

 

Yvonne Monterroso is the Technical Product Manager for ePortfolio. She defines the strategic direction of the product, and works closely with our clients to shape future versions of ePortfolio. Yvonne has been with Desire2Learn for 5 years and is continuously learning from experiences that clients worldwide share with her.

 

Rob Moore is the Instructional Technology Developer for the UNC School of Government. Rob’s experience includes supporting Blackboard and Sakai, developing and supporting online classes and online learning modules, and working with instructors to integrate technology into their courses. Kevin Oliver is Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for Instructional Technology at North Carolina State University. He teaches several online courses for the I.T. and E-Learning Certificate programs at N.C. State. He earned his Ph.D. in I.T. from the University of Georgia, and his M.Ed. in Educational Media and Instructional Design from UNC-Chapel Hill. He has been active in several projects at N.C. State's Friday Institute to evaluate the North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) and ubiquitous one-to-one computing programs across the state. His research interests include integrating Web tools and design objects into teaching and digital history.

Teresa M. Petty is an assistant professor and coordinator of online programs in the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She earned her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, her teaching focuses on instructional design, secondary schools and mathematics methods. Her research interests include teacher attraction/retention in high-need schools and online teaching/learning.

Barbara Renner worked for a number of years in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including developing and running innovative off-campus programs, Barbara's first library position was to develop UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries' resources and services for newly emerging distance learning programs, as the Libraries' Distance Learning Specialist. She now serves as the Health Sciences Library Liaison to Allied Health Sciences, coordinating resources and services for this group of users, and teaching library and information skills across the curricula of the 7 divisions. She also co-directs a course in Speech and Hearing Sciences on Research Resources and Technologies. In addition to library support of distance learning one of her areas of interest and expertise is the use of emerging technologies in teaching and learning. Barbara Roberts began her career as a High school science teacher for 11 years in Columbia, South Carolina.   She earned her teaching degree from Clemson University and holds a Master's Degree also from Clemson University.  She has been an educational consultant for professional development and account manager for CompassLearning for the past 20 years.  Barbara is currently responsible for CompassLearning accounts in North and South Carolina.

Beth Shepherd is an Instructional Technologist in Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) at North Carolina State University. Beth supports faculty with learning technologies and online courses and leads a variety of learning technology workshops including Elluminate Live!, Camtasia, and Moodle. She holds a B.A. in English and a B.B.A. in Business Honors from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently enrolled in the Master of Education in Training and Development program at North Carolina State University.

 

Mike Shumake was the NCVPS Teacher of the Year in 2009, and he is on Governor Perdue's E-Learning Committee for the state of NC. His blog, www.quickedtech.com, focuses on education technology that is available right now and that is free to implement. Mike Shumake has been a course designer, project coordinator, course lead, presenter at iNACOL and NCTIES, and teacher evaluator in online educator. He holds an MSA from NCSU, and he works hard to constantly push for the positive changes that online learning is bringing to teaching and learning throughout the state and the nation.

 

David Smith is Director of Technology Innovations and Applications at Fayetteville Technical Community College where he oversees many of the learning technologies initiatives such as distance learning and the development of 3D-interactive learning activities. He is actively involved with the Kenan Foundation (Kenan Mentor), NC-LOR, NC3ADL, and the NCCCS VLC. He serves as the Director of the VLC Technology Support Center and the VLC Development Center.

 

Nancy Smith is a National Curriculum Specialist for CompassLearning. She began her career as a Exceptional education teacher for 10 years in Nashville, Tennessee and then in Orlando, Florida She earned her teaching degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. She has been an educational consultant for professional development and implementation  manager for CompassLearning for the past 10 years.  Nancy is currently responsible for CompassLearning accounts in the SouthEast.

 

Sophia Stone earned her  M.Ed and  Ed.D from North Carolina State University. She coordinates the Graduate Certificate Program in E-Learning, and teaches in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Counselor Education, Instructional Technology Program.  Sophia is also a Research Associate with the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, where she provides collaborative leadership in the area of online professional development. Most recently Sophia worked at Duke University, as Assistant Director for Distance Learning with the Talent Identification Program. Sophia's research interests include online teaching and learning, instructional design, distance education administration, and 3D virtual worlds.

Michelle Valada is a  Regional Sales Manager for Bb Collaborate specializing in K12 accounts in NC.  She served in various positions over the last 5 years at Elluminate prior to the merger with Blackboard.  Michelle started her career at Tribune Co., working for the Orlando Sentinel and Sun-Sentinel.  She holds a B.A in Communications from the University of Central Florida.

Cyndi Wellner is the Distance Learning Advisor for Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C.  She introduced online learning at Independence in Spring, 2009 through dual enrollment courses offered through NC colleges and community colleges.  To date, students in her school have earned over 100 college credits. Currently, her school boasts over 400 enrollments in the virtual classroom in high school and college credit courses.
